Blockbuster sales growth for Birkenstock is not guaranteed

German sandal-maker may count the cost of expansion

Birkenstock is grasping Barbie-mania by the ankles. Appearing on Margot Robbie’s de-heeled feet in last summer’s blockbuster solidified the sandal brand’s evolution from hippy staple to mainstream fashion symbol.

Capitalising on the PR success is going to cost. The cork-heeled sandal-maker has warned that margins will come under pressure this year as it invests in adding manufacturing capacity and rolling out more new stores in the hope of capturing higher demand.

The German footwear group has guided towards an adjusted earnings before interest, taxes and other items of 30 per cent this year, down from 32.4 per cent last year and 35 per cent in 2022.

The question is whether Birkenstock will maintain its style cachet with consumers this year.
